The Library Where AI Became Open
How Hugging Face helped turn artificial intelligence into something people could build together
For most people, artificial intelligence appears as a finished product. You open a website, type a
question, upload an image, or speak into a microphone, and something answers you. The difficult part
seems to happen somewhere far away, inside enormous data centers belonging to companies whose names
have become almost synonymous with AI. But behind those polished interfaces is another world, one
that looks much less like a collection of products and much more like a library.
In this world, people do not simply use artificial intelligence. They download models, inspect their
code, compare versions, share datasets, build applications, publish experiments, and improve what
someone else started. Much of this activity happens on a platform called Hugging Face, which has
quietly become one of the central meeting places of modern machine learning.
The name is unusually friendly for a technology company, but the idea behind it is serious. Hugging
Face has helped create a place where artificial intelligence can be treated less like a sealed
product and more like a collection of things that can be studied, modified, combined, and shared.
That distinction matters because the future of AI may depend not only on who builds the most
powerful models, but on who gets to build on top of them.
The modern AI industry was not born open. Some of the most capable systems in the world are developed
behind closed doors, trained on enormous collections of data and operated through private
infrastructure. Users can interact with the resulting models, but they often cannot inspect the
underlying system or reproduce the process that created it. This approach has obvious advantages. It
can protect intellectual property, simplify control, and make it easier for a company to build a
single polished product.
But artificial intelligence also grew out of a culture that had spent decades sharing research.
Scientists published papers, programmers released libraries, universities exchanged datasets, and
developers built new systems on top of existing ones. As machine learning became more powerful, the
tension between these two worlds became increasingly visible. The technology was becoming more
important at exactly the moment when access to its most advanced forms was becoming more restricted.
Hugging Face emerged in this gap. Founded in 2016, the company initially became known for work around
conversational AI before evolving into something much larger. Its Hub eventually became a place
where researchers and developers could publish machine learning models and datasets in a way that
felt familiar to anyone who had used a software repository. The important idea was not that every
model had to be perfect. It was that the models could be available for other people to examine and
use.
The most important part of an open model may not be the model itself, but everything that
other people can build around it.
That is where the library analogy becomes useful. A traditional library does not create every book it
contains. Its value comes from bringing many works together, making them discoverable, organizing
them, and allowing people to move from one idea to another. Hugging Face works in a surprisingly
similar way. Its repositories can contain models, datasets, documentation, evaluation results, code,
and different versions of the same project.
The result is an ecosystem rather than a single piece of software. A developer can find a model for
language, another for image generation, a dataset for training, and a framework for running
everything. Someone else can take that work, adapt it, publish a new version, and make the result
available to the next person. The chain can continue without every participant having to begin from
an empty folder.
This changes the economics and the speed of experimentation. Training a large model from scratch can
require enormous amounts of computing power, data, engineering time, and money. Starting with an
existing model is a completely different proposition. Even when significant work is still required,
the starting line has moved forward. Open models turn some of the accumulated work of the AI
community into a shared resource.
The Hub is now much more than a place to download model files. Hugging Face describes it as a
platform for models, datasets, and applications called Spaces. Repositories use version control,
allowing projects to keep histories of changes and collaborate in ways that resemble modern software
development. Spaces can turn machine learning models into interactive applications that run in a
browser, making experimentation visible rather than keeping it buried inside a developer's computer.
This matters because AI is not one technology. It is a stack of technologies that depend on each
other. A model needs data. Data needs preparation and evaluation. Models need software libraries to
run. Applications need infrastructure. Developers need tools to compare results and reproduce
experiments. A platform that connects these layers can become more important than any individual
model hosted on it.
That is why Hugging Face is sometimes compared to GitHub, although the comparison only goes so far.
GitHub became a central place for people to share and collaborate on software. Hugging Face is
helping create a similar layer for machine learning, where the things being shared are not only
source code but also trained models, datasets, experiments, and working AI applications.
There is an important distinction hidden inside the word open, however. Not every model described as
open source provides the same degree of access. Some projects publish model weights but keep parts
of their training data, development process, or infrastructure private. Others impose licenses or
restrictions on how their models can be used. Open AI therefore exists on a spectrum rather than as
a simple switch that is either on or off.
Hugging Face has become part of this debate precisely because it sits between the ideals of open
research and the practical realities of running a technology platform. It hosts public projects, but
it also offers private repositories, paid services, managed inference, security features, and
computing resources. The library has to remain useful to a community that wants openness while also
operating as a sustainable business.
That tension is not a weakness of the idea. It is one of the defining problems of modern AI. The more
useful an open platform becomes, the more infrastructure it needs. The more infrastructure it needs,
the more expensive it becomes to operate. And the more valuable the platform becomes, the more
interesting it becomes to the companies that supply the hardware and computing power underneath the
entire industry.
This is where NVIDIA enters the story. For years, the company has been one of the most important
suppliers of the computing hardware used to train and run AI models. Its GPUs became a foundational
component of the modern AI infrastructure, while its CUDA software ecosystem helped make those
processors deeply integrated into machine learning workflows.
The relationship between open AI software and NVIDIA hardware is therefore more complicated than it
first appears. Open models can make AI more accessible and create more competition between model
providers, but those models still need somewhere to run. A thriving open ecosystem can ultimately
generate more demand for the computing infrastructure that powers it.
On September 3, 2026, NVIDIA announced that it would acquire Hugging Face for approximately 12.93
billion dollars. The agreement includes about 11.9 billion dollars for Hugging Face shareholders and
roughly 1 billion dollars in equity incentives for employees. NVIDIA says Hugging Face will continue
as an open platform, with developers able to work across different models, frameworks, and computing
environments.
The acquisition is therefore interesting for a reason that goes far beyond its price. NVIDIA is not
simply buying another AI company. It is moving deeper into one of the places where developers decide
which models they will use, which tools they will build with, and which technologies will become
part of the next generation of AI applications.
That does not automatically mean that Hugging Face will become closed or that open AI is
disappearing. In fact, NVIDIA has explicitly said the opposite. But ownership still matters. A
platform can remain technically open while its strategic direction changes, and a company that
controls an important layer of the ecosystem inevitably gains influence over what happens above and
below it.
The situation is reminiscent of a pattern that has appeared repeatedly in computing. The most
powerful companies do not always need to own the final product. Sometimes it is enough to control a
layer that many other products depend on. Operating systems, app stores, browsers, cloud platforms,
developer tools, and chip architectures have all become powerful in precisely this way.
There is another reason the Hugging Face story matters. The platform represents a different idea of
technological progress from the one most visible to consumers. The public tends to experience AI
through a handful of recognizable assistants and applications. Developers experience it differently.
They see thousands of models, datasets, libraries, benchmarks, licenses, repositories, and
experiments constantly moving through the ecosystem.
That world is messy by design. Projects disappear, models are replaced, datasets are revised,
benchmarks are challenged, and new techniques spread from one research group to another. It can be
difficult to understand from the outside, but this constant exchange is precisely what makes an open
ecosystem powerful. Progress does not have to come from one company deciding what the future should
look like.
Hugging Face helped make that ecosystem visible. Instead of asking people to trust that an AI system
exists somewhere behind an interface, it gives them a place where some of the underlying pieces can
actually be found. You can inspect a model card, download a model, examine a dataset, run an
application, compare versions, or build something new from what someone else has published.
That may ultimately be the most important thing about the company. Hugging Face did not invent open
research, open source software, or collaborative machine learning. Those ideas existed long before
it. What it helped create was a recognizable physical and digital place for them to meet at a moment
when artificial intelligence was becoming too important to remain a purely academic pursuit.
Today, the Hub contains millions of models, datasets, and AI applications, and its role continues to
expand. The scale is already large enough that it is difficult to think of Hugging Face as merely
another startup. It increasingly resembles infrastructure, the kind of layer that can quietly become
essential because so many other projects depend on it.
And that brings the story back to the library. A library is valuable because no single person owns
all of its knowledge. Its purpose is to make accumulated work accessible, searchable, reusable, and
connected. Hugging Face has brought a similar logic to artificial intelligence, at a moment when the
technology is becoming one of the most consequential tools ever built.
Now that library belongs to NVIDIA. The shelves remain open, the books can still be read, and the
community is still there. But the ownership of the building has changed. That may turn out to be one
of the defining questions of the next phase of AI: whether openness can survive not by staying
outside the biggest technology companies, but by becoming important enough that those companies want
to own it.
